From numbers to patterns
A new reference book shows: Through everyday play situations at home and at daycare, children develop important math skills.
Comparing quantities, numbers or counting - simple games make a great contribution in the early development of children. At globegarden, number magic plays an important role in all stages of children’s development, as you can see in our Math Rocks Bildungsplan. The importance of this is also shown in the book “Mathematische Familienförderung in der Kita. An Intervention Study on the Effectiveness of Family Mathematical Support in the Last Year of Kindergarten” by Julia Streit-Lehmann. It has just been published in the book series “Bielefelder Schriften zur Didaktik der Mathematik” by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden.
The German mathematician is researching the effects that can be expected when parents are encouraged by the daycare center to play together and read (before) reading in the family with concrete material offers: “The results show great potential: All subsamples considered were able to benefit significantly from the intervention.” She writes: “Mathematical learning begins in infancy and is part of young children’s natural skill development. [...] The family environment and the daycare center are considered to be the two most important educational settings for young children in terms of their educational biography. Attempts to quantify the influence of both places of education on the development of young children, for example in the context of quality studies, predominantly come to the conclusion that the family represents the greater influence compared to the daycare center.”
We are happy when we see our efforts in the Math Rocks Bildungsplan confirmed by such scientific work. And of course, it’s great when our work provides an impetus for practicing together at home with your family.
